FIL-AM LEADERS CONDEMNS PH CYBERCRIME LAW, CHINA’S AGGRESSION IN PANATAG SHOAL

Los Angeles— Scores of Filipino-American leaders in the Public Forum (Talakayan sa FACLA) vehemently condemned the Cybercrime Law in the Philippines and the latest acts of aggression perpetrated by China agains the Philippines as well as it military build-up to claim the islands in the West Philippines Seas.

With, Atty. Roman Mosqueda as the resource person for the weekly Talakayan sa FACLA Public Forum last Thursday at FACLA. the Filipino-American legal luminary extensively discussed the cybercrime bill, its ramifications and compared it with the Cybercrime Law in the United States.

Atty.Mosqueda who was also at the forefront of the anti-martial law struggle with the Ninoy Aquino Movement (NAM) in the US also lambasted at the “chilling effect” of the Cybercrime Law in the Philippines against the “free press” and the people’s democratic movement.”

He also pointed out that the ” carry over of the 300 years old Spanish Codigo Penal that gives a heavy penalty of 6 year raised the ante by the draconian law punishment for on-line libel by 12 years imprisonment with the new cybercrime law. A lawyer in the US and in the Philippines for 25 years, Atty.Mosqueda pointed out, ” that while in the US libel has been decriminalized and is only a civil action, in the Philippines it is not. I think that is what good Senators like Ed Angara missed in framing the law.”

China’s Military Build-Up

The Fil-Am leader Art Garcia and Marc Caratao also decried military build up of China in appropriating more than 12% of its GNP for military spending. In fact, China’s water hosing of Filipino fishermen in Panatag Shoal is a blatant act of aggression.

FACLA’s president Austin Baul Jr. said, “These is an appropriate time to condemned China’s harrassments against the Philippines. Ibagsak ang pananakop ng Tsina!”

Baul said, ” The Filipino-American community stands with the Filipino people who will defend their freedom and democratic rights against all kinds of aggression of China against it territory . He also ask Atty Mosqueda to support FACLA in its mass action at the China’s consulate in LA in the future.

Atty Mosqueda assured the crowd that the Philippines have a chance in the UNCLOS to win its case at the Panatag Shoal. He also pledged to lead and support the coming mass action against China.
