Los Angeles—In a special discussion for Philippine Independence Day, June 12 for TALAKAYAN moderated by journalist Sid Balatan and Press Club President Leo Pandac, the participants for the weekly community forum called on PH Vice President Jejomar Binay to resign from the cabinet.
More than 60% of the participant believe that Binay could do more open campaigning and will not be perceived to be “opportunistic” if he will resign from Aquino III cabinet and expose the shenanigans in the Aquino administration.
Dr. Marc Caratao said, “ Binay could do more outside of the administration than to do” critical collaboration” with the Liberal Party which continue to attack him and his family.”
Art Garcia also said, “ when Binay resigns, the honorable thing that he can do–then people will perceptions of Binay as an opportunist will change once he resigned and concentrate on his campaign for president in 2016.”
Significance of June 12, 1898
The significance of the PH Independence Day, June 12, 1898 was also discussed during the June 12, 2014 TALAKAYAN.
Dr. Marc Caratao pointed out, “the declaration of the PH Independence on June 12, 1898 was the culmination of the 1986 Revolution and handed Spain its defeat and the demise of its empire in Asia and the Caribbean nations of Cuba and Puerto Rico.
We were the first Asian Republic and we have to fight a war for our independence against the Americans after winning it against Spain.
Meanwhile Dr. Leo Pandac also stressed, “That the Philippines was the first colony of the United States and with the signing of the Treaty of Paris in December 10, 1898, all Philippine territories like Guam, the Carolinas and the Marianas then all became US territories and still are today.
The Filipino-American War (1899-1916)
Art Garcia on the other hand explained, “ the Philippines defended its hard won freedom by waging a 16 years Filipino-American War from 1899 to 1916.
Even with scandals like PDAF, tragedies like the YOLANDA, Filipinos still proundly waves the flag and are proud to be Filipinos all over the world” Garcia ended.
The TALAKAYAN also thanked the food donors like Orly Cagampan and Marc Caratao. TALAKAYAN is a weekly community forum held in FACLA every Thursday at 10:00 AM. The public is invited to participate.
